Mosfet gate driver as PWM level shifter
Anik , 10-25-2024, 10:46 AM
HI, Is it possible to use Mosfet gate driver as a PWM level shifter. I need 3.3V pwm from microcontroller to 10V pwm signal for a LED driver which requires 10V pwm. I was wondering to use MCP1416 (https://www.lcsc.com/product-detail/Gate-Drivers_Microchip-Tech-MCP1416T-E-OT_C83775.html) for it. Will it work??Thank you.

It might. Thing is, we do not know the input of your LED driver....

just need 10V PWM signal by 0%, 10%, 20%...... 100% duty cycle for brightness and current does not matter cause 20mA is enough.

"*...to 10V pwm signal for a LED driver...*" -- So is the gate drive **the** LED driver, or is there another driver that needs 10V PWM input? The way you have written is, implies the second."*...cause 20mA is enough.*" -- That sounds like the date driver **is** driving the LEDs.Do note that this gate driver does not have over current, short circuit nor over temperature protection.

This is the LED driver datasheet. The datasheet says the pwm input is isolated on the first page and page 6 and 13 has other information about PWM. But dont have enough information about current

The datasheet does state:"*Source Current on Vdim (+)Pin 90 uA 100 uA 110 uA Vdim(+) = 0 V*"Do note that my comments on the MCP1416T still stand:"*Do note that this gate driver does not have over current, short circuit nor over temperature protection.*"So if a short circuit is made in connecting while powered, it probably will damage your driver.

Ok then. Maybe the 10K or more resistor can prevent this issues.

Well, a 1206 1k resistor would be better. It can then drive up to 12mA. And a slight overload if shorted (144mW compared to standard 125mW).

This one worked perfectly with 1K and shorted as well. Thanks.
