I am reaching out to inform you that I have been assigned a project focused on the development of an ATEX-certified people tracking device. Could you please advise on the key phases, compliance requirements, and any best practices that should be followed when working with ATEX certifications for such devices?

No, directives do not have design guidelines, they have requirements.

Simply speaking, it is about not (able) to create sparks (in the 'outside' air).

Think about power supply (dis)connection, IOs, etc.

How much experience do you have with electronics design?
Have you ever done a product that required safety (eg. 13849, 61508, 62061, etc.)?

It is about sparks and heat, or better, the lack thereof.
This includes all (most?) failures!
So one simple rule when designing is thinking with each component you place: what if?

While my experience has been largely focused on IoT product development and high-speed design, I have not yet had the opportunity to work directly within the ATEX (safety-critical) product sector. However, I am eager to expand my skillset and contribute to the development of products in compliance with ATEX standards

Standards do not tell you **how** to do things. They tell you what your design should **comply to**.
I think ATEX requires a notified body for assessment too.

Anyhow, I will simply refer back to the second half my previous comment.
Perhaps one useful tip: high-speed and ATEX are more like opposites of each other.
