Usage of Offpage Connectors
PMICnewbie , 02-12-2024, 10:45 PM
When certain blocks are called in a bigger higher level block, are off page connectors necessary? provided that there are actually defined at higher level block and get used at a lower level block. What if we don't define offpage connectors, will it be detrimental in future part of the project? (foorprint attachement and layout). What about GND and VCC wires and labels?PS: I know this may come within my enrolled course videos but I needed a response before I got to that stage in the Allegro course

I don't remember exactly how this is implemented in OrCAD / Allegro, but there may be preferences where you can set net behavior to global / local etc. Did you have a look around the software? I don't have ORCAD / Allegro installed, can't check it.

I do not know how this is in Allegro/Orcad either, but to the question "are off page connectors necessary?" I would say: It depends.- Re-use block require it ("ports" in Altium).- Company or personal requirements.Personally I use "strict hierarchical" design (Altium). So net labels are only local, so are power ports (which I do not use).

So there is off page connectors that are described in this tutorial time stamp (19:33), bus entry section:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSObMZ0N0hU&list=TLPQMTQwMjIwMjR9Kg5lqLxn2w&index=2also I see the offpage connectors in my menu, what is your advice, thanks again for the support

usually you use off page when signal continues on another page

@Robert Feranec What I mean is this that you defined in the course project. You used offpage connectors for Test points but jumpers for VIN and Power etc, my question is If I have test points, are offpage connectors necessary? You didnt do offpage connectors for soldering pads for I/O What about other signals that are on different schematic pages in ORCAD but share the same net name? If I dont do any offpage connectors will Allegro treat same net names different on different schematic pages
Robert Feranec , 02-26-2025, 06:13 AM
signals connected to the testpoints are coming from different schematic page, that is why offpage symbols are needed. Power symbols don't need offpage symbols, they are global by default

"If I dont do any offpage connectors will Allegro treat same net names different on different schematic pages": depends on settings, but yes it can. but that is not only the reason why to usee them, you really would like to know if the net also continues somwhere else.
