Altium Designer Guidelines about polygon.

Anik , 06-06-2025, 08:10 PM
Hi,
I am new with altium designer.
Unfortunately I have used polygon plane for all. So having trouble when using GND pour. I should use solid region. But Altium was not user-friendly to me.
Like easyEDA pro has all option in one click. On the top editing bar on altium I only found polygon but, after some research I found solid region on top bar in place section.
Now how can I cpnvert desired polygon planes to solid region like the easyEDA.
Image attached.
Thank you.

why would you like to convert it? polygons should be fine

If I use direct connect then the thermal relief is not working for other. If I not, then the needed solid region getting thermal relief.

EasyEDA has the option to set rules for individuals. If altium has this, then I can manage also without remake all the shape.

Altium is user friendly, but you are mixing all terminology.
**Planes** are layers with a single net, like Gnd. Yes you can do split plane, but that is not so much the point here.
**Solid region** are regions **without** openings for clearance or thermal relief. A **fill** is like a solid region, but just square and not flexible in shape.
**Polygons** have a outer shape like a solid region, but will open for clearance and thermal relief.

For both the planes and polygons you can specify, though the rules, how they are 'connected' to pads (TH or SMD) and vias.
In your screenshot on the rule, you have set it to 'Simple'. If you set it to advanced, you can set how TH, SMD and vias are handled individually.
In my screenshot you can see a 'complicated' rule where the air gap depends on the footprint. There are multiple rules in that design.
Alternatively, each pad has a thermal relief setting. However, that is best used sparingly as it is very labor intensive so only 'works' for a few pads.

also, you can set thermal relief for a specific pad - if that is what you need:

Hi @QDrives Yeah, I got them. As I am new on Altium. But learned a lot from here. Can you tell me how can I easily learn the custom query functions?
Anik , 06-09-2025, 03:09 PM
@Robert Feranec Thank you, this works.

One of the easiest ways is to use the "Find similar objects" option and have it create a query for you.
Once you have a query, you can modify it.
