Removing Heat Sink

c3mdc , 03-31-2017, 11:01 AM
Hello,

I am planning on using the OpenRex in an enclosure. Due to height restrictions, I plan on removing the heat sink. Do you think the system will still be able to run? I could also look into a lower profile heat sink.

Thoughts?

Thanks

If you use SOLO, the board may be able to run fine. QUAD will need heatsink.

In any way, you will need to test it by yourself in the environment where you would like to run the board e.g. you need to simulate the ambient temperature (it's a big difference if the board is running in a freezing environment or directly on a sun in summer day), you need to simulate also airflow around the board (if you close it into a box, there may be no airflow - nothing is going to cool down the processor) and the applications running on the board (some applications generate more heat than others).
