When I add 3d model for symbol

Click on this and show us what the Properties panel says after you click the Place->"3D Body"

This sounds like the problem you are having - please read and confirm.

I get a dialog to select a .step file.
Perhaps you should press the tab key and select "generic" in the "3D model type" part of the properties panel.
